QUESTION 1

What dosage of adrenaline/epinephrine should be administered?

  • Intra-tracheal adrenaline dosage is 100 μg/kg. Yousaf's birth weight is 1200 g which is converted to kilograms. 1 kg = 1000 g. Calculation 1200 g ÷ 1000 g = 1.2 kg
  • Dosage 100 x 1.2 = 120 μg
  • Adrenaline is available as 1000 μg in 10 mL of 1:10 000 adrenaline solution
  • Volume 1.2 ÷ 1000 x 10 = 1.2 mL.

QUESTION 2

There is noted blood loss at birth. What volume of replacement fluids should Yousaf be given?

  • Give 10 ml/kg of Group O negative blood if suspected blood loss
  • 10 ml x 1.2 kg = 12 mL.

QUESTION 3

Intravenous access is secured and HR remains at <60 bpm at 5 minutes. What repeat dosage of intravenous adrenaline/epinephrine should be given?

  • Intravenous adrenaline dosage is 20 μg/kg. Yousaf's birth weight is 1200 g which is converted to kilograms. 1 kg = 1000 g. Calculation 1200 g ÷ 1000 = 1.2 kg
  • Dosage 20 μg/kg x 1.2 kg = 24 μg
  • Adrenaline is available as 1000 μg in 10 mL of 1:10 000 adrenaline solution
  • Volume 24 ÷ 1000 x 10 = 0.24 mL.

QUESTION 4

Active resuscitation continues at 9 minutes, heart rate <60 bpm. What dosages of glucose or sodium bicarbonate would be indicated?

  • (a) Glucose 10% dosage is 250 mg/kg bolus. 250 mg = 2.5 mL
  • 250 mg x 1.2 = 300 mg
  • 300 mg ÷ 250 mg x 2.5 mL = 3 mL bolus
  • (b) Sodium bicarbonate 4.2% dosage is 1–2 mmol/kg. 1 mmol = 2 mL
  • 1 mmol x 1.2 kg = 1.2 mmol. 1.2 mmol x 2 mL = 2.4 mL
  • 2 mmol x 1.2 kg = 2.4 mmol. 2.4 mmol x 2 mL = 4.8 mL
  • Dosage 2.4 mL to 4.8 mL.
